About Absolute Geotechnics
Absolute Geotechnics (AG) was established in 2016 by Rob Thomas, a Chartered Geotechnical Engineer and Engineering Geologist with over 20 years of global consultancy experience.
Before founding AG, Rob led the mining geotechnical division for a major international consultancy in Perth, Western Australia – a jurisdiction renowned for its world-class safety standards and rigorous regulatory framework.
Throughout his career, Rob has managed and delivered complex geotechnical assessments across the mining lifecycle. His expertise spans from managing large-scale field investigations and design studies (Scoping to FS) to conducting forensic evaluations of slope instability and independent technical due diligence for international financial institutions.
Today, Absolute Geotechnics serves as a strategic bridge between technical rock mechanics and commercial risk management.
While we operate as an independent advisor to mine owners and international investors, we are also frequently engaged as specialist geotechnical leads by global multi-disciplinary firms – such as ERM and Hatch – to provide niche expertise for high-stakes international studies.
This dual role provides us with the high-level oversight required to move projects forward safely and efficiently, backed by a commitment to technical excellence. A full list of our technical publications and presentations can be found here.
With deep roots in the Western Australian mining industry, Absolute Geotechnics maintains a profound respect for the Traditional Custodians of the lands where we have worked and trained. We carry the high standards of safety, technical rigor, and cultural respect from our Australian heritage into every global project we undertake.
